The IN4climate.NRW initiative

IN4climate.NRW is a new working platform involving industry, science and the North Rhine-Westphalian state government, which to date, is unique in Germany. The initiative aims to develop strategies to enable the North Rhine-Westphalian industries to maintain their high level of competitiveness, generate additional growth and contribute to achieving the Paris climate protection targets.

Climate protection is to become a driver of modernisation for North Rhine-Westphalian industry and a means of securing the future competitiveness of domestic industrial ventures. Developing innovative approaches, such as for prospectively climate-neutral production processes, is an absolute necessity.

For this reason, the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia has established IN4climate.NRW. The platform facilitates the initiation of a collaborative, innovative work process by experts from North Rhine-Westphalian industry, science and the state government.

Industry partners involved in the initiative include enterprises and associations from various energy-intensive sectors such as the steel and metal, chemical, cement, glass, paper and building materials industries. In addition, scientific support is to accompany the working process.

More specifically, the partners will work in so-called innovation teams to examine how production processes and value chains can be rendered climate-neutral in the long term or how industry can contribute to the development of climate-friendly products. The scientific partners will conduct the necessary studies, while specialists from the state government will work on shaping framework conditions that are conducive to innovation and climate change.

The initiative is open to all industrial companies in North Rhine-Westphalia. Should you be interested in working with us, please contact us here.

Monday, 18 March 2019 • 10:00 - 16:45 (Brussels): Policy Day: Transition to fossil-free basic industries: technology pathways and policy needs

Co-hosted by EASME, the initiative IN4climate.NRW and REINVENT.

The event adopts a multi-stakeholder format to enable the development of a joint understanding of opportunities, challenges and policy needs in the ´hard to abate´ industrial sectors. The overall objective to explore emerging visions for industrial zero net-carbon pathways and their policy implications and share information and develop knowledge between key EC, core industrial regions, industry and academic experts.

The event includes:
i) policy sessions, to present and discuss policy options in order to explore new ideas and approaches to policy development.
ii) stock-taking of emerging pathways, to present and discuss technology pathways based on current understanding, and identification of knowledge gaps.

Speakers include representatives from DG RTD and other DGs as well as from IN4climate.NRW. It also involves representatives of Material Economics, CEFIC, HYBRIT, IN4Climate and REINVENT, EC Innovation Fund, DG GROW, IT50, ClimateStrategies, NRW.

Technology pathways and roadmaps are emerging in sectors such as steel, plastics, paper and cement. The role of electrification, circular and biogenic carbon utilisation, CCS and new interdependencies between sectors are salient features of such pathways. We will take stock of the current understanding of future options and strategies and based on this explore the implications for future policy-making, research and society at large.
