In addition to the Wuppertal Institute, which takes a leading role, five other institutions are involved in SCI4climate.NRW. These other partners are the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology (UMSICHT), the German Economic Institute (IW), RWTH Aachen University, the VDEh Institute for Applied Research (BFI) and the German Cement Manufacturers’ Association, VDZ gGmbH. Their joint aim is to subject the options for the development and organisation of a climate-neutral industrial base to scientific examination and to study the technological, environmental, economic, institutional, social and (infra)structural system-related challenges facing companies in the energy-intensive primary sector. The scientific work undertaken includes producing studies as well as developing concepts for new approaches.
Each of the project partners takes lead for one of the following four topic areas addressed by SCi4climate.NRW
Topic area 1: Technology and infrastructure (Fraunhofer UMSICHT in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University, Chair of Technical Thermodynamics)
Topic area 2: Products and value chains (RWTH Aachen University, Chair of Operations Management)
Topic area 3: Case studies and transformation pathways (Wuppertal Institute)
Topic area 4: Framework conditions and business models (German Economic Institute, Cologne)
Leaders from the topic areas are represented in the innovation teams.
